Sometimes you'll print one page and it will be fine other times it will also be cut off. 1,2,3,5, and 6 will print fine, but the fourth copy will be cut off halfway down the page and the rest of the page will be blank. For example, you can ask the program to print six copies of a form. The problem with this is that the page gets abruptly cut off during printing, intermittently. This is a Java application, pure Java as near as I can tell. The only outstanding problem at this point is with a custom app from Canada Post for printing custom forms. I asked pointed questions and got the wrong information. Next: turns out that the issue with the Word mail merges is actually with the merge process itself. Apparently the new firmware resolves some spool issues and has some customization settings for it. There were multiple independent issues going on and they were confused about how things were flowing, as was I.įirst things first: the deal with the Ricoh copier has been resolved with new firmware that Ricoh came in and programmed. I should have also mentioned that I tried the "Print directly to the printer" option in the printer settings. Usually what we see is that for a big job is that the server/workstation will spool for a long time and then suddenly the printer will start spitting out paper really quickly. If it helps any for the thought process, it definitely seems to have something to do with spooling. The Ricoh sees it more because those tend to be bigger jobs, but all of the various HPs are affected. QTDEV: Printing is crappy for "larger" jobs and it's ALL the printers. But yes I did completely uninstall and reconfigure drivers.

The PCs which are primarily affected are new workstations which were configured after the domain was upgraded and the NT server removed, so I don't think drivers have carried over.

I have tried both drivers from the Windows CD as well as direct from manufacturer wherever possible. Yes, I tried removing and reinstalling drivers. The client is VERY unhappy and while they haven't come out and said so, I don't think I'm going to get paid for my work until this problem is solved. Looking for absolutely any idea, no matter how weird it sounds. I have run PING tests which tell me that network connectivity is great. I have checked firmware on all of the devices. I have checked to make sure that I have latest drivers for the printers. This happens with several different programs, on several different machines, in various environments. Tried using the files off of the local machine rather than the server, no luck. I tried setting them up as local printers, to spool locally. The printers are all spooled off of the server. We're talking 30 minutes to print a 7 Mb file. But a mail merged Word file or a file from one of their custom programs is intolerably slow.

Any files, specifically, seem to be slow. Things run fairly well, except for one major thing: printing.

They still have the same domain environment, with some newer P4 systems running XP Pro replacing older machines that had Windows 2000. Recently they have upgraded to a Windows 2003 Server from Dell, dual HT processor with 2 Gigs of RAM, armed to the teeth. They had some computer issues but nothing major during this period. They are a printing house with a large variety of printers, mostly HPs with Jetdirect but one giant machine from Ricoh which is used for the big stuff. Company had a NT 4.0 server in a domain environment.
